Case study – Plant Room: Hospital Cooling Water Flow Measurement – Hospital CHW

For large infrastructure sites such as hospitals, monitoring chilled water flow is critical for building cooling. Given the significant amounts of water these buildings use, it is vital to have an automated management process in place to monitor on site usage of chilled water services (CHW) and identify areas of high consumption.

This data can then be used to look at ways of optimising energy usage and ensuring sufficiency in cooling of especially patient and treatment areas.

One such example is a large ‘Acute Services’ London based hospital that required their chilled water (CHW) consumption to be monitored and evaluated against KPI’s as part of their facilities management process.

PA Energy, an energy and water services company with an impressive track record in assisting customers to reduce their utility demand and costs, were contacted by an existing client and asked to review the CHW metering data to identify problems with chilled water use for the purposes of building cooling.

Heat metering (and cooling) requires three values; the flow rate, the temperature of the supply heat transfer fluid (usually water) and the difference between temperature of the fluid in the return leg of the system and the supply leg.  These values are used to calculate the energy consumption which can be reviewed and savings potentially made. Percy Albuquerque Technical Director commented
